SMX INCREASES DRIVER PAY FOR SECOND TIME IN 2005

Fort Dodge, IA - (July 1, 2005) Smithway Motor Xpress, Inc. is pleased to announce its company drivers and independent van contractors will receive a pay/settlement increase in July 2005. This is the second such pay increase for company drivers in 2005 and the fourth increase in a one-year time span. For independent van contractors, this is the second settlement increase within a year.

Effective on all loads delivered after July 1, 2005, SMX company drivers, not associated with a specific dedicated fleet, will receive a $.01/mile pay increase. SMX independent van contractors will receive a $.02/mile settlement rate increase on all loads delivered after the same July 1, 2005, effective date. Increases will appear in drivers pay/settlement statements July 15, 2005.

The company driver pay increase, the fourth within a year, represents a 10 percent average pay increase to our drivers since August 2004. SMX is committed to providing our independent contractors and drivers a competitive, viable compensation package through continued, periodic increases.

SMX drivers can look forward to this trend continuing as the organization positions itself for further growth and profitability. We appreciate our drivers commitment and all that they do for our customers and our company, said Tom Nelson, Director of Human Resources. At Smithway, we realize professional, safe drivers are the key to Smithway moving in the right direction.
