Almost every new driver wants to be an Owner Operator immediately. The reasons may vary. Some of them are valid but others are quite misguided. Being an Owner Operator is a challenge so it is not something that can be taken lightly. What many drivers want is total control which is not necessarily what they will most likely get.
Drivers usually think that they can choose where to drive or what to drive. Dreams of having the power to say No! to any dispatcher and the refusal to transport certain loads are very tempting.
Every trucker wants to spend more time at home. Quality family time is something that everyone needs to have. New drivers want to be in a position that gives them the ability to decide when to go home and for how long. They believe that as Owner Operators they can be home whenever they want.
Most Drivers also think that when they can not get home they can bring home to their trucks. New drivers that want to be Owner Operators, want to ride along with their families, friends and pets. They believe they can make more money this way. Dont get me wrong, many people can become extraordinary Owner Operators, buy more trucks and start their own trucking company, but there is also a reality that we can't ignore: initiating this business involves many risks. Some Owner Operators do really well, some Owner Operators barely make it and others end up in bankruptcy.
If you have the necessary experience and you are aware of the risks involved, go ahead and take the chance. Becoming an owner operator is a big responsibility and can offer great advantages to those who do well. But remember, like any other business, there is always a risk factor directly related to every chance of reward!
