Finest drivers of the food service industry were honored at a banquet of the just recently concluded 2010 Food Industry Truck Driving Championship. Drivers from Ben E Keith Foods, Performance Foodservice, and McLane Foodservice Distribution were noticed for their first-rate performance.
The truck driving competition, held by the International Foodservice Distributors Association (IFDA), came about September 10-12 in Orlando FL. The declaration of the winners was held in September 12, last leg of the event, at an awards banquet sponsored by Penske Truck Leasing.
To be a part of the competition, drivers had to win, first, a company or local competition. Contestants of the truck driving competition came from across the nation and as far as Hawaii and Canada.
The competition is about testing the skills and knowledge of food industry drivers. Here are the three categories included in this safety event: Straight Truck, 3-Axle, and 5-Axle. Combining the drivers who participated in the competition, they represent more than 66 million accident-free miles. One of the third-place winners has accumulated 3.3 million accident-free miles after 40 years of service in the industry.
The three-part championship covers a written examination assessing driver know how of safety and operating procedures; a vehicle inspection to search for five planted equipment defects or safety hazards that could affect vehicle readiness; and a driving course contest where drivers are gauged on their skills to manage a series of six course problems replicating everyday conditions.
