In 1948, Charles Lazarus was only twenty five years old when he began a business that was to be totally dedicated to children and their needs just in time for the post-war baby boom. At that time Charles had no idea that his first baby furniture store located in Washington D.C., would evolve into a eleven billion dollar business that it is today with approximately 1,500 stores scattered all over the globe.
Charles opened the first ever toy supermarket in 1957. Off-price retailing and positioning were revolutionary concepts in an era when malls and discounts were unheard of. Charles sold his stores to a company named Interstate. When Interstate filed for bankruptcy, Charles once again joined the company and led it to profitability.
Toys"R"Us became a public company in 1978. And today, Toys"R"Us, Inc. operates six divisions: Toys"R"Us U.S., Toys"R"Us International, Kids R Us, Babies"R"Us, Imaginarium and It has its largest market in the U.S. and operates the largest free-standing destination toy and baby specialty stores.
