The Phillips family has operated Builders Transportation Co., LLC since Frank Phillips purchased the six truck operation in 1961. Builders has since then been a family owned and operated motor carrier. Builders is a flatbed carrier that operates throughout the 48 contiguous states but primarily in two-thirds of the eastern parts of the United States. Builders fleet currently consists of over 400 trucks with Mr. Phillips as President with his three sons, Frank JR., John Paul and Gene as Vice Presidents. The operated company has grown at an impressive rate by providing outstanding service to producers and consumers of coil steel, wire products, structural and sheet steel, aluminum products, building materials, cast iron and steel pipe. Builders is a core carrier for customers like Alcoa, American Cast Iron Pipe, Thomas and Betts and US Steel.
Outstanding service comes from great the great drivers employed by Builders. The Company has high expectations from their drivers and offers a great pay package too. The average professional company driver at Builders earns about $850 a week while owner operators average $1.23 per mile and that is before fuel surcharge. Builders has a fully automated dispatch process including Qualcomm. Builders also has a very low driver to dispatcher ratio where every professional driver known by his name and not his truck. The customer service department is always a couple of days ahead of the drivers, on many occasions planning drivers on loads before they unload to minimize down time.
The management believes that minimizing cost can be achieved a great deal by purchasing and operating late model, fuel-efficient equipment, safely. Over the road breakdowns are extremely expensive. Builders maintains a late model fleet by trading road tractors every four years.
The Marketing DepartmentÂâ€Ã¢„¢s strategy is to targeting large, financially secure shippers who have multiple locations is the marketing departmentÂâ€Ã¢„¢s strategy allowing the truck to reload in the same place they unload.
In keeping with their quality and services standards Builders requires that owner operators are required to have their tractor and trailer inspected by the shop each quarter. Thus confirming to the maintenance standards of the company.
