In 1928, the first Brookshire store opened in the town square of Tyler, Texas and in the 1950Ââ€Ã¢„¢s Brookshire's built its first warehouse there too. By the 1980s Brookshire's began operating supermarkets under the Super 1 Foods banner, offering customers money saving options. In the present day, the company operates 154 stores under the banners of Brookshire's, Super 1 Foods and Olé Foods in an expansive market area covering Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Utilizing the people-first operating policies that have been in place since the company's inception, Brookshire's has chartered progressive territories, leading the way in the supermarket industry.

Over the last decade, the company has put its core values into practical implementation as its stores have adopted schools in their respective towns, working with administrators to determine needs the store can best meet: a people- first initiative at work. The company is aided by Volunteers who help with activities including reading to classes, tutoring and helping with athletic events. A laudable company effort was in 2003; the company raised approximately $120,000 for Children's Miracle Network, children's advocacy centers and other children's charities through an annual benefit golf tournament and other fund-raising events. The Check-Out Hunger campaign allowed stores to collect cash donations for food banks in all company service areas. In 2002, more than $12,000 was raised in stores and donated to five food banks in Texas and Louisiana as it was Brookshire's endeavor to helping local food banks. The following year had the company serving 15 million meals to East Texas families through the Food Bank. BGC is also a strong supporter of school-sponsored livestock programs and invested approximately $95,000 in student livestock auctions in 2003. The organization provides shelter, food, clothing and job training for 28,000 families in Tyler and East Texas each year.
