The company was founded in England in 1827 and is one of the oldest continuously operating meat manufacturers in the U.S which celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2002. It is a wholly owned and independently managed subsidiary of NYSE traded Smithfield Foods, Inc., (SFD) the largest integrated producer of processed meat and fresh pork in the United States. The companyÂâ€Ã¢„¢s annual sales figure $2 billion which is a number achievable by the wide range of products offered to the market.  

John Morrell's corporate headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio serve as base for the Company's executive, sales and marketing, finance, and information services departments. Its technical staff, including its research and development center; a complete USDA certified pilot plant and quality control laboratory is also housed here as is the companyÂâ€Ã¢„¢s own in-house graphic arts department. The companyÂâ€Ã¢„¢s fresh pork products are marketed across the U.S. and internationally and its processed meats include hams, hot dogs, bacon, lunchmeats and smoked sausage.

The companyÂâ€Ã¢„¢s processing facilities are efficient as its plants are modernized in accordance with constant technological advancement and it has eight USDA-approved meat facilities, each specializing in specific product areas. The largest of these is at Sioux Falls, South Dakota and produces fresh pork and a full line of processed meats. The other seven processing operations are for fresh pork -in Sioux City, Iowa; portion control and cooked meats in Des Moines, Iowa; specialized smoked meats in Great Bend, Kansas; premium corned beef and foodservice bacon in San Jose, California; Curly's Foods, specializing in fully cooked BBQ meats in Sioux City, Iowa; Cumberland Gap ham and smoked sausage facility in Middlesboro, Kentucky and the sausage specialties processing plant in Springdale, Ohio.
