Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative was established in August 14, 1940. Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative started it operations with around 1600 customers inherited from the old South Carolina Rural Electrification Authority.
 
Blue Ridge was established with only 2% of South Carolina farms with central-station power verses 100% today. Presently, Blue Ridge serves around about 55000 customers over nearly 6000 miles of power line. Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative currently has about 160 employees and also utilizes a number of contract crews in its line construction and maintenance programs and another 50 employees in the Blue Ridge Security Systems organization.
 
Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative supplies electric service in five counties of Upstate South Carolina. Geographically, the cooperativeÂâ€Ã¢„¢s service area encompasses more than 1,800 square miles. Terrain ranges from gently rolling farmland on the southern end of the system to the most mountainous and wooded areas of the state to the north. Blue Ridge has about 7300 customers in Anderson County, 3600 in Greenville County, 32 in Spartanburg County with the remainder divided almost equally between Oconee and Pickens counties. Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative have four locations; Anderson, Pickens, Travelers Rest, and Westminster.
 
Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative Inc is a customer owned not-for-profit electric distribution utility that serves 55000 customers in the upstate of South Carolina. Headquartered in Pickens, South Carolina, the cooperative offers electric service to portions of Anderson, Greenville, Oconee, Pickens, and Spartanburg counties. To better serve its customers, the cooperative maintains three offices in addition to its Pickens location. These are located in Westminster, Anderson and Travelers Rest. There are twenty distribution cooperatives in the state and Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative is the second largest and together these twenty cooperatives serve more than 500,000 members in over 70% of the state. Blue Ridge Electric provides thermal imaging to commercial customers.  This infrared testing can detect heat generation caused by loose connections or other sources in electrical panels, junction boxes, and at load centers and this enhance preventive maintenance measures by correcting potential problems before other equipment is damaged and by helping to reduce fire hazards. 
 
Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative provides a line of decorative lamps and poles. Monthly fees are determined by the design of the fixture and offers reliable and cost-efficient utility service with value added services.
