The first store in this series of Rite Aid's opened in September 1962 as Thrif D Discount Center in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Many mergers and acquisitions down the line led to the addition of many more stores and ultimately, expanding to five northeastern states by 1965. It was officially called Rite Aid Corporation in 1968; the year it made its first public offering and started trading on the American Stock Exchange and by 1970, Rite Aid was listed at the New York Stock Exchange.

A decade in business saw Rite Aid operating 267 stores by 1972, in 10 states. By 1981, Rite Aid had become the third largest retail drugstore chain in the country and in 1983, passed the $1 billion sales mark – an all time high for the management and highly dedicated team of professionals running the facilities. Partnering with the Internet pharmacy drugstore.com – which offers online health, beauty and pharmacy related options and products, in June 1999, Rite Aid made its presence felt in the web world too. Convenience and efficient service provided by this alliance let Rite Aid customers order prescriptions online at drugstore.com for same-day pick-up at Rite Aid stores.

The Corporation is now of the nation's leading drugstore chains, combining its modern store base, brand name, modern distribution centers and superior pharmacy technology with a talented team of 72,000 strong, full and part-time associates serving customers in 28 states and the District of Columbia. Rite Aid currently operates close to 3350 stores, reporting total sales of $16.8 billion at the end of its 2005 fiscal year.

On the national front, the corporation remembers its social responsibility too and Rite Aid supports ChildrenÂâ€Ã¢„¢s Miracle Network (CMN). By selling $1 CMN balloons in its stores and hosting special event fundraisers, the stores have altogether raised more than $10 million for 110 different childrenÂâ€Ã¢„¢s hospitals since 1994. The goal that is guiding these efforts is the mission that founded The Rite Aid Foundation - to help improve the lives of those who live and work in the communities where Rite Aid does business: started and maintained ever since its establishment in 2001.
