Colonial Freight Systems, Inc was started in 1943 as a small, intrastate, Alabama trucking operation to the national, multi-service transportation company of today, the company has maintained the same philosophy of innovative service at reasonable prices. In 1950, operating as Colonial & Pacific Frigid ways and serving the emerging frozen food industry. Colonial now holds both contract and common carrier nationwide authority.

The company grew with the rapidly expanding frozen food industry and changed to keep pace with customer needs in a competitive market. Their Dry Van Division, which operates over irregular routes with concentration on the Eastern half of the U.S. Perishable LTL service is available from points in New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, New York City, and Baltimore, Maryland; to points in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Texas.

The Colonial corporate office located in Knoxville, Tennessee, is the center of operation for their terminal offices across the U.S. While the terminal offices handle local scheduling and contribute to the smooth efficiency of their shipping network, the corporate headquarters coordinates the overall system. Their maintenance facilities are strategically located throughout the system to service tractors and trailers, thus prohibiting the delay of their owner-operators.

Colonial is one of only a handful of carriers to become totally self-insured. Their program covers liability for cargo and property damage as well as personal injury and workman's compensation.  They have reduced their costs.  The reduced cost has improved their ability to meet their customer needs at reasonable prices.

The company is a 100 percent owner-operator company.  All operators are required to attend Colonial's 3-day, in-house orientation before they are allowed to haul freight.   The Tennessee DOT has stated that Colonial has one of the most complete and difficult road tests given to professional truck drivers.
